Jess & Shannan | 25.6.26 | Pier 33, Mooloolaba
Some weddings go exactly to plan. This was not one of them. This was better.
I want to tell you about the day the sky opened up over Mooloolaba, an entire wedding party linked arms to save a ceremony, and a dog stole the show not once but twice. Buckle in.
The Boys, YouTube University, and One Very Good Dog
Shannan got ready at home, which meant I spent a good chunk of the morning watching a group of grown men huddle around a TV, YouTube tutorial paused and rewound about six times, trying to collectively remember how to tie a tie. Nobody wants to be the one who admits they don't know. Everyone gets there eventually. It was chaos, it was hilarious, and it is exactly the kind of moment I live for behind the camera — the unscripted, unposed, "nobody would ever think to stage this" stuff.
Their dog was there for moral support and, frankly, did more for morale than the tie tutorial did. Little did we know this dog was just warming up for the real performance later in the day.
Meanwhile, Across Town: An Entire Irish Invasion
Jess got ready at her mum's house, which by mid-morning had basically become Irish wedding headquarters. So many of her family and friends had flown over from Ireland for this — accents thick, laughter thicker, the kind of warmth in the room that you can genuinely feel through a camera lens.
The first look with her sister absolutely got me. There's a particular kind of quiet that happens in a room full of loud, happy people right before that moment — everyone holds their breath a little. Jess was an absolute ball of energy all morning, ready to go, buzzing to get down that aisle. You could not have wiped the smile off her face with a crowbar.
Pier 33 Had Other Plans
Ceremony was set up outside at Pier 33 — waterfront, marina views, the whole postcard situation. Then, right as we were about to start, the sky decided it had a different itinerary in mind and let loose an absolute downpour.
What happened next is the bit I'll be telling people about for years. The entire guest list — in heels, in suits, in their absolute best outfits — jumped in and helped move the ceremony setup inside. Chairs, flowers, the lot. No fuss, no drama, just a wedding's worth of people getting the job done together. If you ever needed proof of the kind of people Jess and Shannan have around them, that was it.
And then the ceremony went ahead anyway. Rain, hail or shine, as they say — and on this day, we got all three moods within about an hour. It was genuinely lovely. Ring duty, by the way, was handled with great seriousness by the dog, who carried the rings up the aisle like it was the most important job he'd ever had. Because it was.
Bubbles, Not Confetti
As if the universe felt bad about the rain, it stopped just in time for the exit — and we moved back outside, where the dog decided he wasn't done stealing scenes. They popped the bubbles being blown for the send-off. With their mouth. On purpose, repeatedly, to rapturous applause. Honestly, it was the most "them" way this ceremony could have possibly ended, and I don't think a scripted exit could have topped it.
Photos, Kept Close to Home
Given the weather was still making up its mind, we kept couple and bridal party photos close by — across the road on the grass in Mooloolaba and just above the beach. No trekking off to a second location and hoping for the best. Everyone rolled with it, the light did us a favour, and honestly some of my favourite frames from the whole day came out of that stretch of grass.
The Reception: Where an Irish Wedding Really Shows Up
If you've never been to a wedding with a strong Irish contingent, here's your warning: they do not do things by halves. The reception was where the day properly let its hair down — speeches that had the room in tears one minute and howling with laughter the next, a dance floor that filled up and stayed full, and an energy that didn't dip once.
Massive credit here to More Than a DJ, who read the room perfectly all night and kept that dance floor absolutely heaving. If you're planning a Sunshine Coast reception and want a DJ who actually knows how to run a room, they're the ones.
The Vibe Behind the Scenes
Jess and Shannan also had content creation happening alongside the photography on the day — capturing all those extra behind-the-scenes, real-time moments to go with the final gallery. If you're the kind of couple who wants both the timeless, printable photos and the fast, shareable video content from your day, that's something we can build into your wedding package too.
To Jess & Shannan
Thank you for having me. Rain and all, this was one of the best days I've photographed in a long time — and I mean that as someone who has stood through a fair few downpours in this job. Here's to a marriage with the same energy as your wedding day: a bit unpredictable, a lot of fun, and full of people who show up for each other.
